Fish Tales: A Live Storytelling Event

Fish Tales: A Live Storytelling Event is an annual participatory, event that brings together a group of graduate students, scientist, fishermen, and community members to share and hear stories about science, the environment, and our human connection to it. Featuring 8-10 live storytellers at the Food Lounge in downtown Santa Cruz, this is a unique opportunity for graduate students to share their research with the community in a relatable, entertaining and engaging way to a large and diverse audience.

Come hear a Fish Tale:

We’ve all heard a good fish tale—a riveting story of excitement, of glory, even of danger. Join us for a night of Santa Cruz’s finest fish fables, with a series of short narratives told by local writers, poets, scientists and comedians. The Santa Cruz-Monterey Bay Chapter of the American Fisheries Society, in partnership with the national literary mag Potluck Magazine and sponsored by UCSC GradLab, invite you to hear (mostly) true tall tales of stormy seas, fearsome fights, and dramatic catches. The one thing they’ve all got in common is fish.

Food Lounge, May 3, 6:30pm.

GradLab is supporting Fish Tales with funding to assist with renting chairs, renting audio equipment, printing fees and honorarium gifts.

See the website for the Santa Cruz-Monterey Bay Chapter of the American Fisheries Society here.

WoC Graduate CommUNITY

WoC Graduate CommUNITY will organize social events for women of color graduate students (including woman-, femme-, and non-binary identifying students) with the goal of fostering a community network. This group distinguishes itself from previous efforts to create space for support among graduate women of color rather than solely professional development. Through social events, they’ll want to foster a community network on campus to bring together graduate women of color from various departments.

Anecdotal evidence suggest that women of color graduate students often feel isolated in their respective departments. WoC Graduate CommUNITY aims to create a space for women of color to come together in a safe, supportive environment. WoC Graduate CommUNITY understands that women of color encompass a broad group with a multiplicity of experiences, and hope that providing a social space for women of color will organically grow into friendships that will help women of color feel validated and less alone.

WoC Graduate Community envision a social group that facilities the sharing of experiences, resource and advice for women of color to find what they need to thrive throughout their graduate studies.

With the financial support from GradLab funding, WoC Graduate CommUNITY will be able to provide light meals during their meetings on March15 and June 7, 2019.
